Tracking Time

One of the biggest problems we've had during our homeschooling journey is keeping track of time. You'd think that after being at this since 1993 we'd have that down pat. Think again.

With just 3 in school this year, and many daily tasks to do, an idea came to me. It's simple really. So simple I don't know why I didn't think of it sooner.

At the start of our school day I set a timer for 45 min. When time is up, we set it for 10 -15 min. During this time we tackle small chores around the house. Then we go back to schooling for another 45 min. As long as we keep to this schedule, we are able to keep pace in school, keep up with household chores, and still have time to relax later in the day.

Sharing The LOAD!

I am a homeschooling mom of three and altogether we are a family of five. I found myself being overwhelmed with ''STUFF''...you know the norm...laundry, cleaning, cooking, teaching UGH! I was exausted! Then my little ''light bulb came on''....I thought, ''Have the kids help you with chores''!

So I made a chore chart with four different lists of chores and named them list A, B, C, D. I included helping with cooking, laundry along with all other chores. Each child will do the same list for one week and then they rotate so everyone gets a chance to do everything. I always help the little one -- he's four and sweeping the floor for him really means pushing dirt around, but I love it! The chore chart has really taken the LOAD off and the kids really enjoy helping out.

Check out Dianne Craft's website!

http://www.diannecraft.org/

She offers help for the right brain child. Does your child have difficulty with reading, remembering phonics rules, multiplication rules, struggle with writing, following directions, etc... then check out her website for help. I have begun her program with my daughter only a few weeks ago and I am already seeing an improvement. Her self esteem is where I see the most improvement and that matters more than anything, however I have also noticed improvement in her reading, writing, and spelling.

Homeschool helps
Reusing consumable workbooks

I have 5 kiddos, four I am still homeschooling and one is in college. We have passed down a lot of workbooks through the years. A friend gave me this tidbit: cut the long side of a page protector and slip it over the work book page. Have the child use a fine tip dry-erase marker to do the work. When done, have mom check it, redo any work that needs it, then wipe off the page protector and it's ready for the next kid! This has saved us many times!

Viable Alternatives to College

With so many recent graduates unable to find a job and only 44% of businesses (according to Nathan Jurewicz) planning to hire recent graduates, what are the options for homeschoolers who will be graduating from high school in the next 1-5 years? I am hearing that the movement is going to be more toward apprenticeships, internships and mentoring. Anyone finding this to be true?
