Testing
Slower Homeschoolers May Want TOVA Testing

I have homeschooled for 17 years and I have three ADD/ADHD children whom I love. However, being out of the loop in ''educational expert circles'' I never heard about TOVA testing until yesterday.

I was recently convicted that my pride of independence from outside help was actually keeping my 10th grader from his potential. This testing revealed a severe processing problem which makes him eligible for TOVA testing which will guarrantee that he be allowed to take the ACT and SAT and any other college courses tests without the time limit.

This is huge for him and insures his success in college. He has always been my turtle in everything. I have allowed that slow-paced freedom but have wondered a lot about laziness and whether I helped too much. Now I have so much more to work with. With this testing comes so many resources that I never knew about....

My daughter who will shortly graduate from college knows several people who have this TOVA certification which allows them these special circumstances for testing. They also recieve their workstudy money, if eligible, outright without having to work a job on campus because it is acknowledged that they need more time to accomplish school.

I do not believe everyone with ADD even needs this qualification but for my son...this is HUGE. Just wanted to share the information.

By the way, if you feel you are not quite hitting the target with your kids who are a little different, consider getting some expert help but be sure the help you get has the same philosophy that you do. They should support homeschooling and not drug companies! I can direct you to a great source here in Kingston, TN. Blessings!

Having a Bad Homeschool Day?

Just remember, our worst days at home are better than public schools on their best days! The Lord will bless your efforts to obey your calling. Just ask for the grace that He gives so freely, and it will be granted to you.

Spring Fever

Have you been getting ''Spring Fever''? Has the clean up/clean out bug hit your house. It definitely has hit ours and this time of year we seem to look at things with new eyes. We have found clothes, shoes, toys, things in our kitchen and shed we are no longer using. We usually give the things that are appropriate to families we know. But there are often things that are perfectly useable that don't seem appropriate for anyone we know.

Our family in the last year has found a wonderful resource I thought I'd share with you, it is called Freecycle. The Freecycle Network connects people who have things they no longer want with people who can use them. In addition there is an environmental benefit--these things don't end up in a landfill.

We make sure we get the kids involved. They know that the things we no longer use or play with will go to someone who will. We have given things away and have been happy to help someone else. In December we donated white packing peanuts to a mother who was organizing a program for a preschool and wanted them for snow.

We have also benefited from Freecycle. In the late summer our family wanted to try our skills at canning. We emailed a request for canning jars and received over 6 dozen. Later we delivered a sample of our labors to the folks who gave us jars. We enjoyed a fun family activity, had fun sharing our creations and in the process made these people very pleased with their actions.

For more information go to freecycle.org. There you can find out more about registering (a free Yahoo account is required) and join the email distribution list in your area.

Too Many Books, Too Many Activities

A wise woman (my friend Robin) once said, ''We are training our children in busyness.'' This time of year, as we begin to plan what we will do in the fall and as we buy homeschooling materials, it would benefit our children and ourselves if we took some time to pray and seriously consider what we are doing. Perhaps some of you who stumble upon this don't need to hear this admonition, but I do.

It is easy for me to become greedy about providing materials and experiences for my children. After all, they are good things I want for them. But do they really need to experience all of them before they are eighteen? Am I leaving them time to ruminate, contemplate, and process what they are taking in? Do they have time to dream? To initiate home-bound activities for themselves? To create? To observe the world outside their back door?

Do I?

Parade Magazine Asks: Is Homeschooling Illegal?

Parade Magazine (which appears in our Sunday paper, but I think it is a national publication) is asking people to share their thoughts about the following questions:

--Should homeschooling be illegal?
--Should only certified teachers be allowed to teach students?
--If a judge ruled that homeschooling was illegal in your town, how would it affect your school?

If you want to ''share your thoughts,'' please email them at
paradeclassroom.com and tell them what you think about homeschooling.

Marriage & parenting
Teaching Our Children How to Choose a Mate

Talk to your children when they are very young about what to look for in a mate. Teach them to not get involved emotionally until they examine the family up close. How does the husband/wife in the family treat his/her spouse? What are their beliefs? How does my potential mate treat his/her parents and siblings?

This will give an idea of what your child is getting themselves into. Also, it is so important to not get hearts intertwined too quickly until all has been resolved and the relationship is heading definitely in the direction of marriage.

Another Use for Homeschool Catalogs/Magazines

Rather than recycling your old homeschool textbook catalogs or magazines, condsider giving them to homeschool friends, leaving them on the back table at church, or giving them to people interested in homeschooling. I also leave them at doctor's offices, the laundry mat, and the library (though items over three years old are probably worn out or outdated). I also keep the catalogs and magazines I need for my own reference and use in a clear plastic bin. When it starts getting overfilled I know I need to give some away.

Rosetta Caution

Everyone who is thinking of purchasing Rosetta Stone should be aware that the new version #3 is coming out in April 2008.
There are ''Homeworks Coonsultants'' who are trying to sell the non-homeschool (saying it is the homeschool set) older version for only $10.00 less than the Rosetta Stone website sells it for. I thought everyone should be aware of this because I find it a bit unkind of someone to take advantage of families like this.

A Full Life

The question is not, how much does a youth know when he has finished his education, but how much does he care? And about how many orders of things does he care? In fact, how large is the room in which he finds his feet set? And, therefore how full is the life he has before him?
