The N.C. Maritime Museum in Southport is a sister facility to the maritime museum in Beaufort. The Southport branch houses a collection of memorabilia pertaining to the vast nautical history of the "Lower Cape Fear" area of southeastern North Carolina.
A visitor can follow the self-guided tour throughout the 12 designated stations and on-site Research Library. Free exhibits include seashell displays and a 9-foot model of a shrimp-boat net. The museum is closed on Sundays and Mondays.
These two maritime facilities and the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum in Hatteras are managed by the Division of State History Museums (www.ncmaritimemuseums.com), within the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources (www.ncdcr.gov).
Events at the maritme museums and at other state history museums are listed at www.ncculture.com.
