Buying and Selling on Homeschoolclassifieds.com

Having been both a buyer AND a seller, I offer the following advice:

*Cut and paste the item's listing info. into your email. If there are questions, even after delivery, the info is right at hand.

*Seller, edit the item as ''pending'' instead of deleting the post after you have shipped it....as the seller may have a concern after they receive it. (Or, follow advice above.)

*Purchase Delivery Confirmation (PayPal adds this for 18 cents!).

*Insure package. Sure, $1.70 (for up to $50 ins.) is steep; but, when split by both parties, $0.85 is a small price for PEACE of mind :)

*Seller, package item appropriately, paying special attention to those sharp corners hardcovers have! A little extra packing tape on the outside corners can prevent poke-throughs.

*Seller, have some proof that you have mailed the item (a printed receipt from the USPS counter will list delivery city, state, zip, service and weight for item) OR make sure to get a receipt after having pre-labeleld item scanned in.

*Buyer, drop an e-mail to the seller to let them know the item has been delivered.

*Don't forget to go to homeschoolclassifieds.com to leave feedback under ''Reputation''. (Both buyers and sellers can do this.)

Autism

It takes a lot of commitment, consistency, and perservance. Thank God we are through the teen stuff. All I know that without my Father above we could not have raised this special gift that He gave us. To all parents, hang in there, don't let the kids see you down except on your knees.

God really does direct your child's path

All of my children have different interests, which has helped me to learn about topics from farms in China to computers and digital media, and just about everything in between!

As each child has grown and starting pursuing their own paths, I have been able to see the Hand of God on each of them. My three oldest are now in college, studying law and business, fashion design, and photography.

My oldest is interested in law and/or business. She has always been the champion of the underdog; even as a small child, she would defend anyone younger or weaker than she.

My next daughter is studying fashion. From the age of 3, she has been very particular about coordinating her outfits, offering advice about clothing to her family (even if unsolicited!), and has always enjoyed art. Her desire is to design modest clothing for young women and children.

My oldest son is studying photography and digital media. He has always been interested in capturing images on film, and has won prizes in local photo contests. He in especially interested in photographing God's creation.

As I watch my oldest children grow and develop, I can only stand in awe of how God has directed them. I am looking forward to seeing the paths He has for the three remaining at home.

Sad not to be homeschooling

I have homeschooled 2 children for 4 years and started with 2 more preschoolers but divorce has forced me back to work and the kids to public school. Those of you/us lucky enough to homeschool, treasure the days and your children; there is no more of a safe and loving atmosphere than home. My child has already come home questioning the things I have taught her about how life began, she is no longer sure about creation, and is falling under the influence of others. Sad. Anyway, I have way too many materials to list to sell, Abeka, BJU, and some great misc. stuff please contact if interest or if you just want to chat. Julie

Bicycle Helmet Object Lesson

Since my boys first started riding bikes, I've insisted on them using bike helmets. Of course, not all of our neighbors insist that their children do so. Lately, my 9-year-old boys have been balking at having to wear a helmet when their friends don't. They complain even more when I make them wear one for rollerblading and skateboarding, too.

This morning, while making scrambled eggs, I had an idea. I had each of them drop an egg into the big bowl, from about a foot above it. What happened? Of course, the egg broke. Then I had them drop the styrofoam egg carton (with one egg in it) from the same distance. The egg didn't even crack.

They were curious why I was having them do this. Then I explained that the eggs were like their head, with a hard shell on the outside and soft in the inside. The carton was like their bike helmet. Did they want their head to hid the pavement with or without a helmet? They both agreed that they would rather hit the pavement wearing a helmet.

The next time they put on their rollerblades, they grabbed their helmets and headed out the door with no questions asked!

Preparing for College Admission

This fall my daughter was getting ready to attend a local college. We had sent in all necessary paperwork and had not been able to get information on her admission. We found that it took a personal visit and staying after the admissions people to get any results. Eventhough, the school encouraged students to do all their admissions on-line, there was no response to emails or other inquiries. My advice is to make yourselves as visible as you can when applying to any college. After finally getting to the right person, we had no problem with the admissions process.
Keep good records. Because we had documented all of our daughters books, including outside reading, they were able to look at that and determine whether she had college prep curriculum. Never underestimate the value of those hours you spend writing down your child's accomplishments. Start early and be prepared with professional looking documents.
Our daughter is now enjoying her classes and learning to adjust to a whole new atmosphere. Don't give up when you hit a snag. I was ready to just ask her to stay out an additonal year rather than put up with the process. We prayed and persevered thanks to my husband's encouragement.

The easiest way to bake with yeast

For many years, I was afraid of yeast bread recipes because of the concern for the temperature of the liquid. I have killed more yeast than I care to remember!

I have learned that the temperature of the liquid is not really a concern. I have used cool water straight from my sink and cold mild right from the carton in my recipes, with absolutely great results.

You must be certain to melt any butter and let it cool, before adding to your recipe. Follow the recipe, just don't worry about heating the water or milk. It will take a bit longer for your dough to rise, but it will rise. I haven't noticed any difference in the appearance, texture or taste of my bread or rolls. I have used this method for sweet rolls, loaves of bread, dinner rolls, pizza dough, etc..

I hope this will encourage you to bake more healthy breads for your family, and save money in the long run.

One helper at a time

My little children, like most, always want to help mommy in the kitchen. The problem with this is usually that so many helpers causes mommy stress, what with trying to keep cracked eggs in the bowl while keeping the egg shells out, and at the same time trying to keep another child from getting burned on something hot at the stove, and yet another one from cutting himself while using a knife.

So we assign one Chef's Helper at a time. (The others get to help clean up after dinner.) This way, mommy can redeem these very teachable years when children want to learn and work, and train them little by little how to become a real help. Everyone knows his turn is coming, when he gets to be the only helper. Each child can get to actually cut with a knife since Mommy can supervise him individually. Much less stressful, more fun, and more productive.

Training your children

I come from the perspective of a Christian, but this advice will apply to those of any belief system. Child training is the first and most important aspect of a successful home school. If you do not have your child trained in obedience, respect, orderliness, love for their siblings and their parent; then all the best curricula and methods in the world will not be of much help. If this is your first year to home school, take some time to investigate some good parenting materials and start following a method for good, consistent training.....IN LOVE.

Time Flies....

Within the past year, I have taken up scrapbooking. And before you say, ''Oh, another one....'' It has been the most wonderful, healing and gift that I have given myself (and other family members.) One particular time, I had two of my closest friends over for a ''crop.'' (Crop is a meeting of working on our scrapbooks, complete with food and fun. Oh yeah, reminscing, about the photos one is working with. My current project is particularly emotionally hard anyway. But, from the stack of mementos and photos, I pulled out a birthday card. This card was a two-year-olds birthday card. On the back side of this card, in my own handwriting was a complete description of the honoree's birthday festivities. Who came to the party, a favorite gift, the birthday cake, all was described. About 20 years later, I was transported to that place and time. I would offer this to all the young mothers to do. Because time does fly. Happy Birthday!

Be more excited than the kids!

I taught my first self-planned Immersion French class at our co-op this week. My excitement was off the charts!! I was really into it and excited that I was able to use my French that I learned when I lived in Africa.

The kids were really participating whole-heartedly. There were a few that were bilingual in Spanish and English and were excited when they heard the similarities between French and Spanish.

I think when individuals truly love something and have a passion that is unmistakeable...it can be infectious!!! The helper-mom was getting into it too!!!!

Being a step ahead. . . .

I have instinctively knew that I needed to know ''what's coming'' for me and my children (and my husband, too!)

As we have passed through the ages and stages, I have found good wisdom within the pages of books, radio airwaves and on the internet. For example: when I was pregnant, I read about infancy and when we were in infancy, I read about the toddler years, and so on....

Being a step ahead has helped us weather the growing pains, gain insights and be prepared.

Getting all the Work Done

At one time I was homeschooling four children of various ages. I only have one left now. At the beginning of the week, I would write out Lesson Plans for each of the older children (4th grade and up) with each day's assignments for every subject. Then they would cross off each assignment as they finished it. If it was something they needed to do with me, I would write ''with Mom''. Then they would see me when I was ready for them. At the end of the schoolday, they also had to come to me to ''check off''. I would grade their assignments, administer tests or Quizzes, and make sure everything was done to my standards. That way we didn't get behind and I knew they understood everything.

Math: fundamentals
Don't give up

I have a son who struggles with math - or maybe it is about to become - I have a son who used to struggle with mathematics. We had gone through every curriculum know to man, or so it seemed, and mathematical concepts just would not click into place within his gray matter. Finally, after three times back through the beginning of the Algebra I book - something clicked. Math is still work, but it seems that something finally clicked and math learning is now possible. Maybe it was three times through Algebra I, or maybe it was age, or brain development, or God's grace alone, but the perserverance was worth it. Don't give up - the full story isn't written yet!

Great testing site FREE

www.bookadventure.org is a great site for kids to search for books and it shows the grade level of that book. Also if the book is listed they can take a free online test and gain points for 80% and above which they can eventually trade in for prizes on the site. The parent can also go in and print off the test information for records.

Be the Change

..you wish to see in the world.'' Gandhi

I can blame others or I can correct myself. When I correct myself, I may find that others are not to blame. When I focus on what I am doing now, then I find I worry less about what I cannot change and do better right now.

Scholarships/Middle School

We usually don't think about college scholarships until our students are in high school, but we have recently found that there are many scholarship possibilities for middle schoolers. Also, scholarship searching is so time-consuming that it pays to start searching while in middle school. Your student can list scholarships he/she is interested in and organize them on a timeline for future reference if they are for later years.

Teachers

Teachers, who love to teach, teach others to love to learn. We started out seven years ago very skeptical, full of self-doubts and reluctant to home school. After the first year we were leveling out but still struggling a little. By year two we knew we made the right decision. With one in fourth and one in seventh grade we wouldn't have it any other way. It is still challenge most days, but God gets the glory for all the fun and learning going on in our home.

Avoid feeling overwhelmed

The best way to avoid that overwhelmed feeling that we have at times is to remember that Christ didn't heal everyone who was alive at the time of His life. He didn't hurry; He proceeded calmly from one thing to another, taking care to notice folks as individuals. If you are feeling overwhelmed, you may need a break, or you may be trying to do too much. Remember each child is made by God, and is unique.

Homeschooling & Babies

If you have a little one, why not wear i your baby in a sling or ergo carrier while you are schooling your older children? The baby may even pick up a few things without you even knowing it. I'm not saying your baby will pick out Texas on the map at a year old but it would help with not needing to stop what you are doing to pick up the baby. She/he will be right there already.
