Selling/Buying used curriculum

Always remember the Golden Rule!
(Do unto other as you would have them do to you.)
I feel this applies to everything in life, don't list things without checking their condition first.

Selling:
Pack items well.
Media mail (aka Book Rate) is not only the slowest but also gets handled the roughest. Bubble wrap or an envelope with bubbles in it is a good way to go here. Or other padding of course could be used as well. I have received several packages with rips, corners missing, etc.

Buying:
Always remember that someone else's opinion of the condition of the item(s) may be somewhat different then yours. If you are really concerned with an items condition then ask for a picture, or specifics about its shape.

Hope this helps someone!

Disciplines of Homeschooling Pays Off

Set your standards, set your starting time, and set your disciplines--it will pay off in the long run.

Starting on time helped me so much. I walked away from my daily household chores to start school each day at a specific time. I put the children first and it paid off. I have 2 college graduates (1 with honors), 3 in college, and 2 in a private college-prep high school. Keep your requirements of completed daily work high and your students will achieve high grades.

Higher standards at home means higher achievements when attending a ''normal'' school. Higher achievements mean more scholarships which translates into a rewarding career which makes for a happier individual! Also, have fun doing the day to day work.

Baking & cooking
Cooking is Learning, too

One thing I enjoy doing with my kids is making good food together, whether it be a meal, canning & freezing items, cookies, etc. I can teach a lot during these times. Most of the time instead of all 3 of them helping me though, I prefer one-on-one time, so that we can discuss at their level. In other words, with my 5th grader, when we double a recipe I can get her into the fractions and figuring those things out, while with my 1st grader we do some simple addition stuff. I have found my kids are really teachable about character during these nuggets of time together when we discuss goings-on with them. They will talk to me and we can communicate -- all while getting a job done -- learning, character building, etc.

Have your kids help more in the kitchen -- after all cooking is learning also!

Testing
Self-discipline for Jr. High/High Schoolers

If self-directed studies are still a problem, create a scheduled 'order of priority' list of school subjects that the student can follow through the day. His (her) time -- his (her) responsibility. DO NOT prod or otherwise 'encourage' him (her) at any time. This is not your responsibility. No matter how long the student dawdles, EXERCISE PATIENCE! The rule is -- it must be done before midnight, before any other activity (except eating and regular CHORES of course -- THEY MUST be kept in the schedule).

Life is mostly a matter of choices and priorities, and practice makes perfect -- so be careful what you practice! Remove yourself (mom) from the 'bullseye' in the 'blamegame'!

Baby & infant
Learning IS Fun

From infant to preschool age, kids are constantly learning! Everything they do is practice for something they'll need to know later. Having fun is a great way to encourage a love for learning!

Do things that are easy to set up and don't have a right or wrong way. Enjoy getting messy or wet! Talk about what you're doing and ask them what they're doing. SLOW DOWN...everything doesn't have to be scheduled to be fun. Get down on their level. Let them be the boss (at least for a little while). Draw, take a walk, cut pictures from magazines, do painting, playdough or make mud pies! Enjoy each new stage of learning and know it won't last too long!

Take it easy

This is my 3rd year homeschooling and I think it is vital to take an assesment of your stress level as you go through your weeks. I have found it easier when knowing we are packing alot of ''extras'' into the week to plan a lighter homeschool schedule. Of course, I always remember the ''main 3 R's'' first, then as you can fit the others in.

There were times when we first started homeschooling that I remember stressing so much with other things that my school lacked. Now if I take a deep breath and keep going, maybe slower, I find the kids learn more and I am at peace.

Bible & Spiritual growth
Pleasing Reading!

As we look to serve our Lord and Savior we have a hard time finding reading material, other than our Bibles, to give to our children -- things that will bring glory to God and encourage our children in the ways of righteousness.

There are a few companies I have found which bring me delight...
