Care Ministry Websites to Coordinate Meals

I would like to share a free resource, created by a family in response to the needs of a family at their church. The pastor's wife is in a long battle against cancer and the family is in continual need of meals, household help, yard work, etc.

It's called http://www.CareCalendar.org and is free for anyone to use.

Basically, one person sets up the free account, setting up the
dates/times/needs of the family, just like you would on a piece of paper handed out at church, only online. Then, people who want to help are given a special ''helper login'' to get into the calendar and select an area of need where they can help.

It's great for long term help, but the person who posted the information used it with her church for several months during the beginning of her pregnancy when she couldn't cook. She also used it with another family who's child was having surgery, to provide meals for a few days after he got home.

The family can specify meal preferences, time preferences for their needs (like having supper delivered from 5-6pm) and they'll get an email letting them know who is bringing what and on which day. For example, I would get an email saying that the Smith family was bringing me a chicken casserole on
Thursday night. AND the helpers get an email reminder, so there's no phone calls to be made by the coordinator. And the family can put updates on the site so people know what is going on and any prayer or praise reports.

I also found another similar site mentioned by someone else: http://www.lotsahelpinghands.com/

It has two separate sections: one for Elder & long-term care and one for care-giving and volunteer coordination.

I hope thet either or both of these free sites help someone!

Biography
One reason I homeschool

My Name is Alisha. I am a homeschooling Mother of five. This is a little of my homeschool story.
Way back in the early 80s Vicki had two little girls in the public schools, one in 4th grade & one in 1st grade. The oldest little girl was having a terrible time in school, not being able to read or subtract, always being sent to the Principles' office, nightmares at home & would cry & beg every morning not to be sent back there. Her Mom & Dad knew something needed to change, but how? They could not afford the Christian school in town.

One day while ridding in the car they heard about homeschooling on Focus on the Family Radio show. Raymond & Dorothy Moore were guests that day, and were talking about the benefits of teaching your children at home. Well, that was a strange idea! Was it even legal? How can someone teach their own children? As it turned out homeschooling in that state was not legal. But at the end of the year when they wanted to hold back the 4th grader a year & said she was unteachable, and they were trying to label the 1st grader as retarded, the parents of the two little girls knew something drastic was needed!

So the next year the two little girls sat happily at home and learned with their Mommy. The two little girls that had been told were unteachable & retarded learned by leaps & bounds that year! When Vicki tested them they were a full two years ahead of where they were supposed to be! The little girls had to be very careful not to tell anybody that they were taught at home, & was careful not to be seen during school hours, but they were very happy.

Testing
The Five P's for Excellence

My dad (a professional enginner) had a saying that was easy to remember by counting the P's off on one hand.

Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance.

This advice works not only in testing, but in all areas of life.

Sibling Play Time

One of the blessings in homeschooling is that your children of different ages can learn to interact with one another no matter how many you have.

A great way to have all the siblings learn to get along with each other as individuals is to schedule individual play times during the day while you are working with other siblings or doing chores.

One way to do this is to have 15 minute or 30 minute time periods where you team the children up together. You could also have a teenager play with 1 or more pre-school or younger children.

Have different activities or toys that can be shared in bins or boxes so that you can rotate and keep the times interesting.

Put the timer on and let them play, even when things are going great and you would like them to keep on going, so you can get other stuff done! Stop them and teach them do a quick 5 minute clean up. This will help you down the line once they are used to it.

Science: general
Fun Astronomy/Planet/Solar System activity

This is a fun activity demonstrating the relative distances between the planets.

It comes from ''Exploring the Solar System'' by Mary Kay Carson.

Choose a very long (and quiet!) street, path, or parking lot. We used our church parking lot and drew the planets with chalk. Or, use rocks for markers.

To Get From: Sun to Mercury Walk: 3 steps
Mercury to Venus 2.5 steps
Venus to Earth 2 steps
Earth to Mars 4 steps
Mars to Jupiter 27.5 steps
Jupiter to Saturn 32.5 steps
Saturn to Uranus 72 steps
Uranus to Neptune 81.5 steps
Neptune to Pluto 71 steps

How Foods Can Affect Behavior

When my son was 4, I was still waiting for him to ''outgrow'' some of his behaviors. I thought it was the terrible 2's...then3's...then 4's??? When a dear friend, seeing my struggle at our field trip outing, offered her advice about artificial food coloring, specifically red dye that was just in several of the items in his ''lunchable'', I researched and was amazed at what I found. Some chemicals in foods effect many kids in the same way! It wasn't his fault! I was feeding him what I thought were healthy foods, including his vitamins, yogurt, and even jar pickles have dyes in them!! After lots of label reading and just eliminating foods that had the artificial dyes and flavors in them, I saw an unbelievable change in my son! He was not always hyper and bouncing off the walls, easily angered and frustrated, crying over the littlest things, but able to sit still and much happier! It was a bit daunting at first to ''go natural'' but so well worth it, and now I don't even notice. I do make a lot from scratch and usually bring my own cupcakes for him to eat at birthday parties, but it has been a change for the better for our whole family! If you want to look into this I suggest going online to Feingold Association. They will help you get started and learn more.
Blessings to you from a Less Frenzied Friend!

NJ Homeschool Bill

There is a Bill in the assembly committee which threatens the great freedom that we have to homeschool in NJ. It would put unnecessary restrictions on us.
If either bill sponsor, Sheila Oliver (District 34, East Orange, Clifton, Glen Ridge, Montclair, West Patterson) or Harvey Smith (District 31, Bayonne City, Jersey City) is your assembly person, call them and courteously ask them to withdraw this bill. Your message can be as simple as, ''Please withdraw A. 3123. We don't need our taxes raised to pay for something as pointless as regulation that helps no one. Studies show that children in states with high homeschool regulation do no better than those in states with low homeschool regulation.''

Late note: Enoch has stated that we are to stop calling at this time and just pray and wait for the next step.

For more about see ENOCH's webpage under legislative update. http://www.enochnj.org

Simplicity

I constantly need to be reminded to keep it simple. Its easy in homeschooling to get sucked into the numerous activities, clubs, co-ops, projects and curiculums and end up stressed out. Keep your homeschool simple!

Our life is frittered away by detail...Simplify, simplify. -Thoreau

The ability to simplify means to eliminate the unnecessary so that the necessary may speak. -Hoffman

Reduce the complexity of life by eliminating the needless wants of life, and the labors of life reduce themselves. -Edwin Way Teale

College/vocation
Trust

We are a family of 5 children, getting ready to send the third off to college next year. We have chosen not to be accredited and have been blessed with ''ease of entry'' into college with parent transcripts only. If I can just offer a word of advice to parents of high schoolers it would be to trust God to be faithful to complete the work that He began. It's easy to loose faith and be anxious that your children will not be prepared and will never be accepted into college, and so it must be time to enroll them in school. Don't listen to the enemy. What they gain at home can be much more beneficial than what they will LOSE in public school. Stay the course, keep the faith.

Garden & Yard
Is this really learning?

Sometimes, I feel guilty if I give the kids a day off of school in the spring to help me plant the vegetable garden. Then one day, I thought. Hey, Isn't this learning too? I mean, they are learning what you need to do to raise food. The science involved. That you need to add to the soil to keep it healthy and producing. They are learning what grows well, during what season.Learning how to measure rows, Learning how to space plants so they grow properly. I no longer feel guilty letting the kids help out during this time.

Independent Spelling Tests

I record spelling lists using my daughter's MP3 player. I plug
the flash drive into her computer and upload the spelling lists.
She can test herself when she is ready and never has to wait
on me to call out the words - I've already done it!

Lang arts: chapter books
Reading Chapter Books to Preschoolers

Young children can often appreciate and comprehend far more interesting literature than we might think. In our family, we enjoy reading chapter books out loud to our preschoolers. The books they enjoy the most are about subjects that interest them and also have a picture or two in each chapter. This is also a way that dad participates in our homeschool. Rather than turning on the television in the evening, dad will open up a favorite book and read a few chapters.

Lapbooks

Last year I used all workbooks and some living books for Unit Studies. Now I am doing Unit Studies like FIAR but I get to choose the book and we are making lapbooks.
I thought they would be too overwhelming and hard, but they are the opposite. We have fun making them and when we are done with our Unit we have a nice way to preserve our hard work!

Don't Grow Weary...

No matter what is happening in your life. Discipling your children through homeschool is one of the most important things you will ever do for them. Don't lose heart and turn your heart and mind over to the one who can help you most... our most precious LORD.
