Chasing My Tail? Part II

Remember that beautiful dog we acquired a few months ago that loves to chase his tail? Well, he still loves spinning around and around, trying to attack that thing! Unfortunately, we humans have a tendency to ''chase our tails'' during the normal course of our lives; we fill our plates with endless activities, appointments, places to go, people to see, ''important'' things to do. When we live like this, we end up frustrated, stressed, and burned out like an old, useless light bulb. Where we once burned bright, now we are just surviving, barely making it through the day to get things done, and having little to no impact in the lives of our precious homeschooled children, or even our spouses. Here are three simple changes you can make to simplify your life:

1. Make your calendar your best friend! Fill in all of your appointments, then step back and take a look at it. If you are out of your home more than 3/4 of the week, something needs to go.

2. If you are a person of faith, begin your day with prayer and Bible reading; seek the Lord and ask Him how HE wants you to arrange your day.

3. If you're children are involved in three or more sports, figure out which ones they can really live without, and focus on the one or two that they love and do well. What are your additional responsibilities and community involvements, and how do they factor in to your calendar?

In my next installment, I will give you 3 more adjustments you can make to help you stop, ''chasing your tail''!

Back in the Saddle

As a mother who homeschooled her three kids for 3 years, and then
after a move returned them to public school, I am looking forward next
week to our ''old new beginning''. They all currently attend a great
public school with which I have no quarrel, but I am feeling that God
has put it on my heart that it is again time to homeschool. And who
am I to argue with that? Even though I am now working full time and
I know this will not be easy, I also know that since God is in it, He will
make a way for it to happen. My thirteen year old has decided that
she doesn't want to homeschool at this time but my 10 and 8 year old
boys are excited and ready. As is their mother! And hopefully after
we get started, she will change her mind and join us too! So here's to
''old'' new beginnings and the thought that it's never too late to begin
again!!!

Marriage & parenting
Quote of the Day

My mother had a plaque on our wall for years and it made an impression on me that has carried into my own parenting:

''Children have more need of models than rules.''

Then, when we had our first child dedicated at church, our pastor asked us, ''What is the best thing you can give your children?''

His answer: a godly marriage

Not For the Faint of Heart

OK...so, teaching at home can be challenging for so many reasons...but I take comfort when my heart and my strength many times fail, but...the word of God says ''God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever''...

Yes we fail, yes we fall short, yes we can get discouraged, but we have to look to God who never fails, never falls short, and will strengthen our hearts (and hands) for the work!

You may feel like you can't do it - But God in you can!

Who'd Have Thought!

Have you ever thought about how much you give away of yourself? Have you ever stopped to wonder why? Homeschooling is such a demand on your time, your energy, your emotions. You give all you have for your children. For no pay whatsoever, you teach, grade papers, encourage, and create. Without a break, you plan, prepare, poke, and prod. With seldom a pat on the back, you do it because you want to! That's the life of a homeschool mom. The joys are enormous! The pleasures are unending! The rewards come in the form of a sparkle in their eye when they get it, a snuggle when you read to them, a pride when they announce to the world that their mommy is their teacher! Enjoy!!

Baking & cooking
Freezer Meals

A year and a half ago, I bought a great book called, Fix, Freeze, Feast. It is full of recipies for the freezer. But the thing I liked about this cookbook more than others was the marinades. There are many recipies here that simply take raw meat and pour a marinade/sauce over it, then you pop it in the freezer. Then while the entree is defrosting before dinner, the meat is marinading in the sauce. After reading this cookbook, I went right to the internet to look up even more marinades. So now, whenever meat is on sale, I buy some and choose a few different marinades, and voila! I have meals in my freezer, ready for some steamed rice and veggies.

Saving Money on Laundry

Save money on laundry by using 1/2 C baking soda and only about 1/2 the amount of detergent. Bulk stores such as Sams Club or Costco carry huge bags of baking soda for a great price.

Baking soda is a natural cleaning agent, so laundry comes out clean and you extend the life of your detergent.

Saving Money on Curriculum

After twelve years of homeschooling, the biggest money-saver for me has has been to use OLD EDITIONS from popular publishers! The biggest key is that you find complete sets that include the text and questions key. You can compile quizzes and tests yourself using the keys. It's easy and effective especially for subjects like health, history, general science, and literature.

Kids love it

Most kids love to paint or do some artwork. They defiantly love crafts. A really great time to let them do these things is while you read aloud to them. espcially if there some books they prefer not to hear.
