Pros and Cons of Using a Charter School

When my husband wanted me to homeschool our daughter, I was very apprehensive. I didn't feel like I could do it.
So, I researched homeschooling options and found a charter school. I did this for K-2 Grade. It worked out nicely, but I had issues with secular curriculum when she got into Second Grade. The Kindergarten was a little advanced. She learned how to read in Kindergarten.
Without this I might not have the confidence to move onto things that we enjoy doing for our school. So, my advice is that if you want to homeschool but lack the confidence then go with a Charter School for Kindergarten and maybe First Grade, but get out before Second Grade.
Another benefit to a Charter School is all the curriculum is sent to you free. The Kindergarten stuff usually doesn't need returned. And on top of that they send you some money for internet service which we already need and have. So, I used some of that money towards the curriculum that I wanted to purchase.
Although this might be a good start, it might get more secular in the lower grades in the future. Also, they teach everything and the schedule was rigorous and that left little time for the things she really enjoyed.
Another disadvantage to a Charter School is that if you go into First Grade even if your child isn't quite 8 years old yet then when you get out you have to report to the state at least in PA. So, if I were to do it differently I might just do the Kindergarten then get out while you still can! LOL.

Math: fundamentals
Skip Counting

One day when our (then) kindergarten age son was waiting for his show to come on, we were counting. I asked him if he could count by 10's (I knew he couldn't) and he tried a bit. So, I did it and then he copied me (his older brother helped) and mastered it in short order (mind you, this is during a commercial break). Then, I explained that all of those 10's numbers had 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 in between them. By the time the show came on, he not only could skip count by 10's to 100, he could count by one's to 100!!! I'm pretty sure that it took me longer to type this than it did to actually do it!

They Will Get It! And Remember to Pray!

I have a problem with worrying if I'm doing it right. I was so fustrated when I first started teaching my daughter how to read. She just couldn't get it! I would get fustrated and angry. I thought it must be the Teacher.
At the time, I was using a Charter School. They had all the subjects, Reading, Math, Science, Social Studies, Music, etc. I started mid year with them, so we didn't have to complete until next year. I got to keep the Kindergarten curriculum.
So, I prayed and prayed for her to be a good Reader. Remember God hears us and will answer our prayers!
I guess God gave me a little wisdom after the continuous prayers. I put aside all the other subjects and focused on just Reading. Over the summer, I had her do the Reading curriculum every other day until we finished it. When we were done, she loved reading.
Now, she can't put books down! She is only 8 years old and is reading at a 4th Grade level.
So, after this prayer was answered now I had a new worry, Math. Do we ever learn from our mistakes? She wasn't good at Math. After continually praying over Math, she finally gets it! She doesn't enjoy it as much as Reading, but she is getting it!
Remember they will get these things. Sometimes it is just maturity, but they will eventually get it.
Children are such a blessing to us!

Bible & Spiritual growth
Encouragement : Straight from God

Isaiah 55:12
You shall go out with joy, and be led forth in peace.
The mountains and the hills shall break forth before you; there will be shouts of joy and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands,
(as you go out with joy).

Baking & cooking
Supplemental Income and Home Ec

A great way to teach your teenage daughter baking skills and how to make some extra money- start a cookie baking business!

My husband works in an auto-supplier factory with many people who don't have time or the skills to bake for themselves. We began to make different types of cookies for him to take to work and sell, 3 cookies for $1, to his co-workers.

I used to do this myself, but now that my daughter is older, she can do this mostly on her own. This has turned into a whole home economics course- learning the way around the kitchen, what tools are used for which purpose, etc. So, if you are looking for a great way to earn some extra money on a tight homeschool budget, try making cookies!

This money has paid for Christmas presents, bills, and we were able to pay for a week's stay at a hotel on our vacation. It's amazing how fast this money adds up! There are people out there who love homemade cookies and are willing to pay for them!

Why Not Make It Cheap?

The books and materials sit on shelves collecting dust or they sit in boxes in a closet taking up space. So, why not make them cheap when someone else needs them. You could recover half your costs and make someone happy. The materials are sold faster, leaving you more space in your closet. You have more money in your pocket to buy some newer materials for your own use.

God rewards kindness. Remember that kindness is rewarded with kindness! God rewards for your losses, not your gain. Mar 8:36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?

You will see something amazing happen. You might get something really cheap or free. I prayed to the Lord for an encyclopedia set and I got one free that was brand new! Amen. God rewards us! And don't forget to pray!

Turning Books Into a High School Credit

My daughter enjoys reading, and has read thousands of books to date. We decided to use various books that relate to life skills and relationships to earn an elective credit. We listed some of the books she had already read and books she would like to read and came up with a course for study! The list contains books, DVDs and CDs, as well as conferences she has attended. This is a wonderful way to use real life as your school!

You can design a course of study for credit around whatever your child loves to do. Be it carpentry, outdoor skills, baking, sewing, fitness, their collection- whatever their passion is! Use these avenues of opportunity to make high school more enjoyable and a bit easier on both of you!
