Just When You Thought You Knew Everything

I experienced great delight my first year of homeschooling my 7th grade son. He was an ''easy learner'' and it was a joy to share his successes. Once I added my daughter to the mix, I couldn't have been more happy. She, too, was very bright and took to education like a duck to water.

Then came my youngest. From the very beginning he was reluctant to crack the books. At first I thought it was because he was the baby. I thought that his inability to progress as quickly as the other two was a maturity thing. In his 3rd year I began to suspect that he might have a learning disability.

After meeting with his pediatrician and discussing his situation, I learned that there were several different things I needed to try. The first, and most important was that I needed to stop comparing him to his older siblings. Each child is different and will each learn at a different pace, and in different ways. I found new curriculum for him that was better suited to his style of learning, I changed his schedule to reduce the block of time spent on the same subject (we can always come back to it). I think the biggest thing this wonderful child has taught me is that we are individuals, and should be treated as such. Flexibility is another key trait he has introduced to my life.

God teaches us in the most unexpected ways. He not only used my son to teach me some very important life lessons, but he taught me how to teach my son.

I Want to Homeschool My Kids. How do I Start?

You may have heard this or you'll hear it sometime. When people hear that you homeschool, they may want to homeschool their children too. Be encouraging. A good idea is to give your old curriculum catalogs to them. Write your thoughts about each curriculum and how it is used. Answer any questions they may have to the best of your knowledge. You can also recommend that they visit hslda.com for more information on homeschooling, laws, curriculum, etc.

Free Vocab Practice & Earn Free Food for Hungry

I just found a very cool website!
http://www.freerice.com/index.php

It has a free vocabulary quiz where you earn free rice for hungry people for every vocabulary word you get right.

The difficulty of the words is adjusted as you play. If you are good, the words are harder, but your level will stay challenging, no matter what your level. There are 50 levels, but few people can play above level 48! If you get the word right, they donate 20 grains of rice to the United Nations World Food Program. If you get the word wrong, they just tell you the correct answer (so you can learn it for next time you encounter it; no rice is subtracted from your total).

This is a non-profit group which is supported by corporate advertiser's donations to pay for the rice cumulatively earned every day.

After you have done FreeRice for a couple of days, you may notice an odd phenomenon. Words that you have never consciously used before will begin to pop into your head while you are speaking or writing. You will feel yourself using and knowing more words.

What is Your First Love?

At the end of each year we always receive family newsletters from folks we know describing events and accomplishments in their family over the past year. Invariably it seems the focus of each family's news is academic achievements and projects, financial/employment gains, and the like.

While these are probably newsworthy, I have to ask the question, ''Where is the Lord in all of this?'' Are we focusing primarily on worldly job and educational pursuits, or are we seeking first His kingdom and righteouness? That which is of the most value in our lives is revealed by where we invest most of our time, energy, and material resources. What is your first love?

Reluctant Writers!

My daughter, nine, often struggled with ''writer's block'' when faced with a new writing project. She became easily overwhelmed by the blank piece of paper, even though her head was swarming with creative ideas which she had previously outlined or diagrammed briefly.

To help her organize her thoughts, I purchased blank printer paper which I then cut lengthwise into 6 strips. She uses one strip at a time to write a complete sentence from her outline. She then places each strip into a hanging pocket chart.

Editing and revising become easy for her as she simply rearranges the strips or inserts additional strips for detail and clarity. Once composed, I staple the ordered strips together and she types up one or two strips daily until finished...No more overwhelming writing projects...She loves writing now!

Buy Used Whenever Possible

This is my first year homeschooling and I've already spent almost $2,000 on curriculum, supplies, and field trips -- for just one child. OUCH is correct! I can't even believe I've done it. I am now on what I hope to be my third and final math program for the year, have switched reading programs a couple of times, and even went through two writing programs already.

A big lesson I have learned -- you do not need to purchase everything brand new like I did! There are many places you can search online for buying/selling your homeschool items and it really helps save the money!

I am new and learning, slowly but surely! Next year, my budget will be much smaller!

Bible & Spiritual growth
Principle Approach

We are a PA family. Using the Principle Approach has been such a blessing to our family as we have learned to apply Biblical Principles to all of our studies. My children and I have learned how God is truly all in all!

I highly reccommend the work it takes to learn this valuable approach to teaching your children.

Field Trips

If you have children of differing ages and the field trip just wouldn't be appropriate for the little ones, save yourself some headache and be able to enjoy and teach your older ones by employing one of the older students in your home or in your homeschool group to help out with the little ones while you are away. Or you can trade moms and have one or two stay behind to watch all the younger ones and then trade off.

Curriculum Choices

When I started homeschooling five years ago, I thought I would purchase a curriculum, use it all year, and purchase the next level the following year. Now, instead of getting upset over switching gears mid year, I praise God that I'm able to adapt my school to my daughter's needs. I am so thankful that we are not ''slaves to the curriculum,'' and I thank God every day that I have so many choices in curriculum.

Payment

I include Walmart gift cards as one of my payment options when you buy from me. This is very convenient and I think more people should use this option. The buyer simply goes to her nearest Walmart and while shopping picks up a gift card and puts the needed amount on it. The seller then goes shopping at her local Walmart with the gift card. No need to cash checks at the bank.

The Difference

The difference between more experienced homeschoolers and less experienced homeschoolers is mostly this: the more experienced ones are OK with the fact that they really don't have any idea what they're doing, but they love their kids, they're using common sense, and they're making it up as they go.

Be Thankful

Should you notice a new gray hair in the mirror, think of the cancer patient in chemo who wishes she had hair to examine. Or, should you find yourself the victim of other peoples' bitterness, ignorance, smallness, or insecurities, remember things could be worse, you could be one of them.

Meeting Them Where They Are!

Meeting our children where they are educationally is more effective then being on ''grade level''. We are all unique! I found meeting my children on their level is more effective then meeting them on the level that the world believes they should be on.

Encourage Our Youth

If our kids say or do something that make us cringe, they very well could have picked that up from us. Impart kindness and wisdom wisely so they, too, will pour out kindness and wisdom. Besides, someday they could be choosing our nursing homes!

Success in the Eyes of a Homeschool Mom

If I can meet my children where they are today, then my mission is accomplished! I know better than any other human being where my children are emotionally, physically and spiritually. Who knows your child best?
