Homeschooling By Grace

It has been fourteen years since I began homeschooling, and in that time our lives have seen seasons of change, times of peace, and untold struggles and trials. At times I felt I had it all together, on top of all my subjects, lesson plans and chores. Other times I have been tempted to quit, and once I almost convinced myself my children would be better off in school.

But as I stand here looking back, and still with about ten more years ahead of me, I am humbled by the gracious hand of God sustaining us, making my feeble efforts into something beautiful and lasting. He has taken the seed of my oldest, my first student, and made a lovely bloom, fragrant with the grace of God. The others, too, are at various stages of blossoming, and I know at the end of it all they will be ''oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord.''

Even now our lives are unsettled, with my grandmother living with us, the distraction of construction, at times overwhelming illness, yet I enjoy the gracious peace of God that surpasses all understanding. He will cause all grace to abound to my children and lead them into the very calling he has for them.

My hope is for every frustrated mom to find this sustaining grace and fully entrust her children to this awesome God we serve. ''He who called you is faithful, and He also will bring it to pass.'' (1 Thess. 5:24) The only way to really believe these words, to grab hold of them and squeeze every drop of eternal joy from them, is to abide with the One who speaks them. Every day. Hide somewhere for a few moments of prayer if necessary, but go, run to the Shepherd, cast your cares upon Him, for He cares for you. (1 Peter 5:7) There is no other who can give you the same hope and encouragement, for there is no other who is sovereign over all your circumstances.

''Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths.'' Prov. 3:5-6

Schedules: Friend or Foe?

I used to think that schedules were the enemy. After all, isn't one of the benefits of homeschooling being free from all of that?

Over the years I have found that a schedule isn't something to be feared, but rather the opposite. Through much trial and error I have discovered that, for us, schedules make the day run much more smoothly. Everyone knows what to expect and therefore can plan and prepare accordingly. More things fit into the same amount of time because we have planned for it.

I tend to drift about when I don't have a schedule written down. I am still accomplishing things, but often times school time slides away while I tackle too many chores at once. Or I get caught on the computer because there is so much fun stuff to do, and I forget about the laundry piling up or the game I had planned for the children.

My children are this way as well. To my amazement they actually ENJOY having a schedule in place. They love to see what is coming up next and all that they have already accomplished. It is tricky getting all the schedules to flow together but as long as we are not a slave to it and stay flexible, it all gets done. Amazing!

One resource that has greatly helped me with this is ''Managers of Their Homes'' and ''Managers of Their Chores'' -- both excellent, down to earth books. I highly recommend them if you are needing help in this area. Remember, a schedule can quickly become your friend! It has for our family.

Patience!

I find myself praying for patience often. It seems when I do I get tested! I guess the way we learn patience is through experience -- be careful what you ask for!

Patience is so important for our kids. Love IS patient, and kind. If we love our kids, we will be patient & kind. If we do this, then they will know how to be patient & kind. Our world definitely needs more of that!

Mother-Daughter Quiet Time Idea

I had been praying for an idea of how to encourage my two precious older girls, ages 12 and 10, to have morning quiet time with the Lord.

I bought them some beautiful journals and encouraged them to do their quiet time first thing in the morning, which is a habit I have had for several years. The day goes so much better and the house is more peaceful this way. We all do devotions at the breakfast table, but quiet time is a life long habit that needs to be established early.

But they themselves came up with a better idea than I could have, and I know it was from the Holy Spirit. They thought of picking a verse that they could work on, each separately, then getting together after spending several days on the verse. The first verse they chose was Philippians 4:8, and they will look up in their concordance other places in the bible that mention ''true, noble, right, pure,'' etc; then look up the words in our Greek dictionary.

They have made a list of other verses that they want to do, such as the fruit of the Spirit, the ten commandments, Creation, 1 Peter 1:5-7. They even invited me to do this along with them! I am so blessed by this good idea!

Graduating Our First Child

This is not advice, but merely encouragement to all the other parents out there to KEEP GOING!

We will graduate our first child in just seven short weeks. He has been at times both a joy and a trial to homeschool. However, he has turned out to be an awesome young man. He has been offered two substantial college scholarships to two different private universities. He works part time, pays his own bills and has his own car. He has patiently endured being our ''guinea pig'' over the last 18 years and for that his two younger sisters are eternally grateful.

All the years of homeschooling are worth it. Yes, even those days when you feel like you have accomplished nothing and you would really just rather run away from it all. So, for all of you who are still homeschooling, keep going. The rewards will be worth it in the end! God Bless.

Something To Think About...

Two of my favorite quotes:

''The Bible calls debt a curse and children a blessing. But in our culture, we apply for a curse and reject blessings.''
Doug Phillips, Vision Forum Ministries

''Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and proclaiming, ''Wow, what a ride!!!''

Memory Verses

I have learned that memorizing can be a tricky thing to fit into your school day. Recently I have found a solution that seems to help my children. We recite verses at a morning worship time and again at bedtime and in a week or two they are usually pros. Another great way to learn memory verse is when they are set to music. My children learned the whole chapter of 1 corthians 13 in less then a month and preformed it for our church now they are working on Psalms 91. way cool!

Homeschool helps
Raising Individuals

Always remember that homeschooling is about raising individuals -- not the one-size-fits-all mentality that the public schools promote. Having gone through college and grad school too, this was so ingrained in me, and it has been a relief for the Lord to set me free and change my thinking.
It is so beautiful to see each child flourish with the unique gifts and talents that God has given them. The longer I homeschool, the more I realize this, and the burdens get lifted of trying to fit them into another's mold (even that of another homeschool curriculum!).

Teaching Little Girls to Crochet

Our homeschool co-op has found that it is very easy to teach children ages five and up to crochet with a fat needle and worsted yarn. This works best in groups and the best stitch for them to begin with is the granny square. We've had much success doing this and they seem to enjoy it very much, pursuing it during their quiet times each day.

Homeschooled Siblings

Have you noticed that homeschooled kids are, commonly, best friends with their siblings? What a wonderful benefit to add to the long list! Other children know that they'll be heading off to school with a classroom full of peers every day....who needs that nagging big sister or the pesky little brother?! Homeschoolers appreciate one another and learn to get along with those they are closest to. I thank God that our kids are best friends, even now that they are leaving home.

SMILE! It's Free!

Do your husband and children see you smile very often? It can brighten the day for us and for everyone around us. And a little can go a long way. It costs you nothing, but it's worth a million bucks. Smiles are contagious. Let's infect our family members - and everyone else we meet - with our smiles. After all, with the joy we find only in Christ, we have reason to smile. Give it away as a gift to others! It's free!

Pray With Your Husband...Daily!

I am often surprised at how many Christian couples I have talked to that have a hard time praying together, or don't ever pray together at all. How much more powerfully God can work through both husband and wife when they are united together daily in prayer. I challenge all of us homeschooling mothers to make it a priority to pray with our husbands...daily. Anticipate what God will do through your united prayer!

Learning Multiplication Tables

The one thing that has really cemented the multiplication facts for my daughter is timed tests. We purchased ''The Mad Minute'' a while back, and it has been the biggest blessing for our family. I usually time the whole page and have them work to a goal of 30-40 problems a minute.

Science Fair Boards: Cheap!

After paying a mint for Science Fair boards at office supply stores in the past, I discovered that national chain craft stores like Michael's and A. C. Moore have much cheaper prices at about $5 per board. Use a store coupon for 40 or 50% off and save even more!

Inter-Library Loan

Broward County Library in South Florida will ''borrow'' any book from any of the 50 U.S. states for you, if you're willing to be patient. You might want to check your local library, and ask if they also have an ILL (Inter-Library Loan) system.

Show and Tell

Even though our kids know what toys they all have, we have a weekly show and tell so they can talk about their favorite items. It helps the other children have more respect for their sibling's belongings as well as encouraging public speaking.
