Creating a Context for Young Rebels

When 7 year olds start to talk back, try the following:

1. Give him/her lots of choices that he/she can make. I let
them choose their own breakfast, what clothes they will wear
most days (only insisting on weather appropriate), etc.

2. Model the behavior you want to see. If junior is screaming
at you, you remain calm in demeanor and tone. Do not laugh
at them.

3. Firmly insist on the correct tone of voice and volume.
Communication is more than words. Make him/her repeat a
statement if needed. e.g. ''Say it again in a tone of voice that
shows respect for me because I am your mom.''

4. Emphasize what he is capable of. ''I ask you to do your
math because you can. God made you capable of this.''

5. Only allow older siblings to correct younger ones with your
permission. This keeps younger ones from practicing
disobedience situationally, with bossy sisters.

6. When you must discipline, look shocked. Stop what you are
doing. Turn to engage him, but with as much composure as
you can muster. assign the punishment, but try to get him
talking later, to find out what caused it. Emphasize that you
believe he can control himself.

Encouragement from the Word

Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:13-14
Ultimately, our goal is to train up our children to live for God and to serve Him, so that they will one day live with Him for eternity. Let us not forget this in our daily activities, letting ourselves get so caught up in our other studies that we forget what is most important in our lives, and what is going to matter the most in the end. Let us train our children to put God first, and everything else will fall into place.

When a Son Weds

Our oldest son was married Friday.

He and his fiance prepared a slide show of pictures which ran as guests were seated. Tears filled my eyes and joy filled my heart as I watched the photos scroll. Our lives played on the screen for all to see: the joy, the fun, the closeness. When the fathers were asked to pray over the couple, I wished the same had been done at my wedding 25 years earlier. We are so excited to see what God will do with their life. I can't help but thank God for the awesome privilege of homeschooling my children!

Learn Hebrew for free!

There is a wonderful website called Hebrew4christians.com
where you can learn Hebrew for free, including homeschool
lesson plans and printable verse cards.
We have learned so much from this website. It has
really enriched and deepened our understanding of the
scriptures to study the rich, beautiful language of our Lord.

Funny Quote

Recently I was at a homeschool band yard sale fundraiser. One of the young men had a strange idea. I commented that he was at least thinking ''outside the box.'' Their director of many years (and homeschool mom of six boys - mostly graduated) responded with the following:

''The problem with homeschoolers, is trying to get them to think INSIDE the box.''

Sending Media Mail

A bit of FYI: when sending items media mail, be sure to put ''return service requested'' under your name and address in upper left corner. Without this, media mail items that can't be delivered will be thrown away. With it, they will come back to the sender. I found out the hard way .
