My Advice For Your 1st Year of Homeschool

I remember how overwhelming it is when you first start homeschooling. Begin by using the general books from a major homeschool company. Only buy the language arts, spelling, handwriting, and math workbooks and the readers. (You can see what I use at http://www.squidoo.com/homeschool-curriculum-for-elementary .)

For science, simply go outside with a guide book and look up insects, plants, spiders, trees, etc. Plant and grow something from a seed. Make it easy, relevant, and fun.

As you work with your child, you'll begin to pick up on his learning style. You'll also begin meeting lots of other homeschooling families. You'll meet someone who has a child who is similar to your child. You may see a family and think, ''I would love for my family to be just like that family.'' Ask those families what they use. Ask if they can bring their homeschool curriculum to the park and let you flip through them while your kids play on the playground together. If you see something you love, you can buy it.

Finally, familiarize yourself with the homeschool laws of your state. http://www.hslda.org/ does a nice job of summarizing
them.

Grover Cleveland quote

''While the American people should every day remember with praise and thanksgiving the divine goodness and mercy which have followed them since their beginning as a nation, it is fitting that one day in each year should be especially devoted to the contemplation of the blessings we have received from the hand of God and to the grateful acknowledgment of his lovingkindness … On that day let us forego our ordinary work and employments and assemble in our usual places of worship, where we may recall all that God has done for us and where from grateful hears our united tribute of praise and song may reach the Throne of Grace.''

— Grover Cleveland, proclaiming a national day of prayer and thanksgiving, Nov. 3, 1893

Inside Sports

Over the years, I have found that the different sports have expanded the fitness level of my child's character as much as the physique. Playing with difficult players, opposing teams, and even disinterested officials, the level of maturity and problem solving skills learned are priceless. Many would say to run, from the ''world'' and all who are in it, to a safe place but I say that you have to live in this world, like it or not, and the sooner you develop the necessary coping skills to be a true leader of the faith and not follower of the world, the better. Let your light shine regardless of the situation or circumstance.

The Many Blessings of Homeschooling

The advantages and reasons for homeschooling are too many to enumerate. The privilege (and challenge) of having our children with us ''24/7'' enables us to have their hearts and invest in their character, equally if not more important than pursuing academic excellence. With the passing of my mother this year, the flexibility of homeschooling has been such a blessing. Adjusting to the loss of a loved one offers life-lessons. And knowing that our homeschool can continue, albeit in fits and starts, through holidays and the summer is a relief and a load off my mind. I thank God for the privilege of homeschooling.
