Keep Focused

Today's push for academic excellence is a misconception. This push that we are all feeling to push our children towards greater academic achievement is actually initiated by the need for public schools to do well on test scores in order to get financial funding. What has this to do with home schooling? Plenty.

In our communities and our country overall, there is a attitude towards education that affects us all. As the national perspective changes more to testing and the local school districts purposefully teach to the test, so the curriculum publishers follow suit. It is all just a big momentous push towards the world's ways and away from God's directions.

As home schooling families, we need to keep our minds clear of these worldly fads and stay focused on the reasons we home school. Why do you home school? Is it for academic excellence or for spiritual advancement?

Christians are sanctified in Christ and we are not a part of this world. Let our home schooling show this sanctification as we set our face to what the Father directs us to do for our children. We are to raise them in the nurture and admonition of the Lord Jesus Christ, not SAT or ACT or CAT or STAR.

Have fun being with your children. Enjoy the process of leading them to the Lord through your studying of math, science, English and history. It is HIS story, after all!

Unit studies
Summertime Butterfly Unit Study

Summertime is an INCREDIBLE time to unit study butterflies and moths! Check your local library for books as well as the contact information for a local butterfly organization. They can help you identify the plants which are likely to be the food source for butterfly larva (a.k.a. caterpillars). Once your children know what to look for, they can search for eggs and caterpillars. Raising a caterpillar from chrysalis to butterfly is an excellent way to develop observational skills. Plus, it allows your family to observe one of God's incredible miracles, right in front of your eyes! Enjoy!

Follow God's Plan

Don't be tricked into thinking that going to college is the fool-proof recipe for your child to be successful in today's world. I would challenge that thought and even contradict it!

Our 2 oldest children both graduated high school at the end of their 10th grade years. The eldest boy went on to junior college and graduated with a double major at the age of 18 and then to a university. His sister graduated from the junior college at age 17 and then on to the university. You may seem impressed with their academic achievements... so what? What is really important is their Christian character!!!

We have been on the front-lines spiritually with these kids ever since they started their fast-paced college tracks. It has been great and terrible and spiritually intense. I am happy to say that they have come up for air and are doing great! Praise the Lord for that!!!

So, don't get all hyped-up thinking that faster is better and that your kids need to go to college. How big is God? How specific are his plans for your children? Keep your eyes on the Father and his direction for your family and tell the world and their ideas of success to go fly a kite.

As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord!!!

Teaching Self Learning and Time Management

As children get older they can learn to take charge of their school assignments. Give the child a composition book listing out the school tasks for the whole week, page numbers, and expectations of what needs to be completed for the week. Then give the child the option to plan his/her week - what they will start with each day, how many lessons they will accomplish that day and even possibly letting them do the whole week's worth of math in one day if they want and leave lang. arts (or whatever) for another day.

Any amount of freedom in this area that we give our kids helps them learn to organize their time and assignments in relation to their age and maturity.

Everyday is a School Day!

As summer arrives I have a difficult time not getting up and doing school work every day. We enjoy our time together learning and I really like the quiet reading time every morning. Here in NC it is really hot in the summer so staying inside during the hottest part of the day is a no brainer. We do have neighbors over to play and have lunch, but we still do some school work.

My daughters love to help make the grocery list. We like to plan exciting trips as a family, which requires a lot of reading. I receive a lot of help planning our curriculum and schedule for the next school year. We get our folders for each week labeled and filled by mid-July. Breakfast, lunch and dinner is always a team effort. I never have to pair the socks anymore! We like to grow our own herbs and vegetables, and we have great discussions!

So why is it so difficult to say, ''We don't do school in the summer?'' I always tell people that ask me if we are out for the summer that, ''everyday is a school day,'' there is always a place for education everyday of your life, young or old. So when you fill out the attendance record everyday through the school year please remember that educating our children never stops! They also do their part by educating us.

Strategies

Teaching your students strategies for learning is comparable to the proverb that says teach a starving man to fish rather than giving him a fish and he will eat for all his life. As teaching him to fish feeds him for life, strategies help your students become lifelong learners.

We all need and use stategies to learn what we know. Some visualize, some use mnemonics, some memorize, some use silly sentences, etc. Some of us do these things naturally and some of us will have to be taught. We need to teach our students strategies early in their learning and encourage them in their use. Sometimes, it only requires asking them how they learned something and helping them further develop their learning strategy and applying that to other areas of learning. Think about it!

Encouragement

Sometimes when you feel like you are the worst homeschool teacher ever, well then, that is when your student will blurt out something brilliant for no apparent reason. It could be on a car trip, at the store or on his facebook page. There it is for all the world to see or hear and you can know that you did something right. Be proud of your child and yourself.

Reminder to Self (Posted Above My Desk)

Mistakes are powerful teaching tools, not at all a measurement of failure!

God doesn't expect you to get it right the first time. He wants you to enjoy the process-wrong turns and all.

Where there is no vision...the people perish. Prov 29:18

To teach a faith that is rooted and mature, not one that will
quickly shrivel in the face of opposition. CAPITALIZE on the opportunity to study a subject when child is motivated to learn about it.

Elementary Report Card

My 2nd and 4th grader wanted report cards at the end of our first year of homeschooling. Since I did not subscribe to a record keeping system, I made my own template with Microsoft Word.

This is not an official report card for a highschooler, but a tool to encourage those in the early elementary years. This is a 3 column template. Column 1 lists the subjects, column 2 shows the grade for Semester I and the third column I use to grade Semester II. ''Semester I'' is all the work from September through Christmas break. ''Semester II'' is everything from after Christmas break to the end of the school year. On the bottom of the page, I list the grading system, a few words of encouragement and a short bible verse. Hope this helps!

Homeschool Conference Season

Well, 'tis the season to go to a homeschool conference!

I was looking forward to my state conference, but won't be able to go. There were a few workshops listed that would be very helpful, so I emailed the conference organizers and asked if they will be recording the sessions to sell later. They will! Even though I can't go to the conference, I can still order recordings of the sessions I was hoping to hear.

If you can't make it to your area conference, check to see if you'll be able to get a recording later.

God is Faithful

The teen years are hard. Ok, REALLY hard! Parenting through the teen years is probably harder. Some adolescents resent being told what to believe; they do not want religion ''forced down their throats''. If their early exposure to things of God has been properly conducted and they have a PERSONAL relationship with Christ, they will have an inner mainstay (the Holy Spirit) to steady them! Pray! Pray! Pray!

If they fall it isn't fatal, for the Lord holds them with His hand.

Easing The Strain Of High School

After homeschooling two daughters through high school and sending them to college; I lightened the load quite a bit by spreading the required high school courses over five years. Instead of starting high school in the ninth grade year, I found the girls were ready for some high school course work in the eighth grade. I still included these courses on their high school transcript and felt like we did not lose any retention of material for ACT or SAT testing. This gave them extra time for other pursuits and took some of the pressure out of our day.

There's Always Room

There is always room for more love and forgiveness within our homes. I pray that I can extend as much mercy and grace to others as the Lord Jesus Christ has extended to me. It changes things!

Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, ''Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?'' Jesus answered, ''I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.'' (Matthew 18:21-22)

Do Not Compare

Within the home schooling community it is easy to compare everything from house cleanliness to spouses' income to test scores to how long it took to potty train your child. When I first started home schooling I was encouraged to ''Celebrate one another's victories!'' This tidbit has changed my prayer to one of thankfulness to the Lord for the blessings He showers on each of us, and has helped me focus on being an active cheerleader for those around me.

Musical Math Facts

My daughter had some learning differences and had a great deal of difficulty learning math facts in the beginning. Then we got a kit that taught the math facts through a logical and musical (rhyming) system. Suddenly it became fun and easy. She couldn't help but laugh at the rhymes, and she couldn't help but remember the facts while doing the rhymes. That really turned around her attitude about the whole endeavor, too. Success begets more success!

On the Eve of Graduation

Here on the eve of both of my children graduating from college I am surrounded by the fond memories of our years together. Ten years total of homeschooling has added books, papers, and many memories. I wouldn't trade any of my homeschooling days, good or bad, for the peace and quiet so many people seek. Enjoy your kids, teach then your values and you too will be here at the summit of the education of your kids.
