The Value of Speech & Debate

If you are looking for a boost to your high schooler's academic appearance on transcript, consider the value of competitive speech and debate.

1. Improve & Develop Critical Thinking Skills.
2. Higher Performance on Standardized Tests.
3. Oral language skills
4. Broaden practical knowledge base
5. Improve skills in Reading, Writing, Speaking, Thinking, Listening, Current Events, Historical Events, Cause/Effect.
6. Learn to identify underlying assumptions of arguments.
To read more about these benefits see article at
http://www.nflonline.org/uploads/AboutNFL/standards2.pdf
Or just google ''value of speech and debate'' to access articles that will give you a clear view of the value of these activities in our society.

Rather than just take a class in speech or debate, seriously consider competition. Competition provides increased opportunities for skill development--iron sharpens iron--as well as social benefits.

Look for a Christian Homeschool Speech & Debate Club in your area. Two Christian leagues exist for home educated students--Stoa (www.stoausa.org) and NCFCA (www.ncfca.org).

Rosetta Stone

Rosetta Stone is very effective at teaching vocabulary. It is fun to use and keeps your interest.

Rosetta Stone has a serious defect, however. It gives no exposure to the culture of the countries where the languages are used. Culture is a very important aspect of learning a new language, so Rosetta Stone must be supplemented with other materials.

My Microwave the Bread Box

Ever since the big power outage of last fall, Our microwave was downgraded. It became our Breadbox. It didn't work, and we could not fix it at the time. Then it became an experiment about how long we could we live without a microwave.

Apparently, it's a very long time. And there it has dutifully stood. Holding our gluten free cookies, and brownies. Insulating our meals and keeping them warm, instead of reheating them. Often forgotten and lonesome until we are looking for a lost pan, ''Check the microwave''. Yet, never a complaint it has shared. It has humbly stood by and just been what we wanted.

All this time. Until the power outage of spring, 9 months later......(yesterday to be precise). For when our power returned, we found out that our three year old Dishwasher decided to join it in appliance heaven... What's so heavenly about being downgraded to a dish rack? I'll never understand.

But hold on, then there were all the electrical outlets upstairs and the lights. My husband got a brilliant idea! What if, just what if, all those unlabeled breakers that appeared to belong to nothing, actually belonged to something? And our humble microwave, was raised up, exalted, cleaned like never before and restored to it's original place of honor.

For ''whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted''. Matthew 23:12

Postage and Handling

Lately I've been having people questioning me about my postage and handling charges. (I charge $3 for the first 3 books.) Please be aware the Media Mail charges by the pound (not ounce). One pound with confirmation of delivery costs me $2.60. Paypal takes part of my money; packing materials also cost money. Even if I have something I can recycle there is still tape. Almost always, it costs me more than the $3 I charge. Please be understanding. I'm not trying to rip you off. (In fact when selling $1 book sometimes I have paid out more than I got in.)

Taking the homeschool plunge

I have long been interested in the idea of homeschooling, but never really planned to do it myself. All of that changed when my youngest and brightest child was being underchallenged in school and quickly losing interest. As any mom knows, we find the strength and courage to rise to a challenge we never planned to tackle when our kids need us. I was so blessed and fortunate to have several wonderful homeschool moms cross my path at exactly this time in my life! There was a mom who sat next to me in a college class last year, the lady who registered us at the local YMCA, and a family member who always kept to herself about her homeschooling efforts. These three women reminded me to trust my instincts, keep it simple, and do what worked for us.

I cannot tell you how helpful those three simple reminders have been to me throughout our first year. Both my son and I have enjoyed (and at times been challenged) homeschooling immensely this year and look forward to another successful year in the fall. God bless those families who came before us to make homeschooling such an easy and accessible option! And thanks to all those encouraging and supportive homeschool moms who take ''newbies'' like me under their wing so we can learn to soar on our own.

Successful Homeschooling

Many times families have started educating at home without setting goals. It is my advice that home educators make a mission statement for themselves. First, write down the reasons that you home educate your child(ren). These reasons will serve as good reminders on the tough days which we all have.

Secondly, write a list of goals, a vision, for each member of your household in your home school efforts. Dad may be the encourager and listener and provider for the family. Mom may be the educator, curriculum developer or purchaser, the planner of schedules. Child one may have goals for excellence in writing due to a gifting in that area and have goals of understanding mathematics due to a weakness. Look carefully at your family, decide if you are educating for academic excellence, for enjoyment of learning, for religious or spiritual reasons, for health and security reasons. Knowing all of these and having a dated written record will allow you as parents to see all that you are accomplishing and re-evaluate as you see the need.

I hope you have success in your home education process.

Place to give (and get) free books

I recently found a website http://heavenlyhomemakers.com/forum that has a book swap. You can list books you want to give away and also request books you need, all for free. The person who wants the books pays for shipping only.

Although the site is relatively new and doesn't get much traffic yet, I've been able to give away some books that weren't selling here on homeschool classifieds and greatly bless others who needed them.

This is a great place to bless someone with things that maybe you can't list on homeschoolclassifieds, such as half used workbooks or very worn readers that aren't worth selling but that someone would love to have. And also other things that the Lord lays on your heart to give away to someone who needs it that you don't need anymore. It's like donating to Goodwill but instead getting to interact (via email) with the person you are blessing (or being blessed by).

homeschool website - great resource

Donna Young created an online resource for homeschool families in 1998, and it has become her official website. This website is a place on the internet from where you may print homeschool planners, household planners, calendars, handwriting lessons, printable worksheets or papers for several subjects. DonnaYoung.org has grown over the years and continues to grow. Meanwhile, Donna's children have graduated from home school and life goes on.

Leading an Army to Battle

You are as much serving God in looking after your own children, training them up in God's fear, minding the house, and making your household a church for God as you would be if you had been called to lead an army to battle for the Lord of Hosts. ~Charles Spurgeon

Promises from Scripture

The LORD is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him Naham 1:7 LORD, I have heard of your fame; I stand in awe of your deeds, O LORD. Renew them in our day, in our time make them known; in wrath remember mercy. Habbakuk 3:2

Some of the most dramatic and permanent...

James Dobson in his book “Life On The Edge” states, “Some of the most dramatic and permanent changes in life usually occur during those ten short years” (ages 16 to 26). This statement sums it all up very well!
