Planning Your Historical Studies

What do yo plan to study this year? First make a list of all the events you plan to study (like a Table of Contents page). Find some good books that have to do with that historical location and period. Then liven it up with Dover coloring pages on the event, an audio and/or visual (DVD, You-Tube, CD, etc.). Also come up with a craft or activity appropriate for the student's age. This can simply mean making a costume (primitive or elaborate) and dressing up...even going out in it and telling others about what you learned. You might make a shield or Viking ship when studying about them. There are so many cool ideas out there and it is fun to plan this with your kids!

Tip: if you type the plans out in Word, you can include links to websites you want to visit for that study, then click on a YouTube, craft idea, or other neat website depicting the person or event...

Be sure to include Geography in your studies! Maps, postal cards, & brochures are great additions, especially if Notebooking.

Feeling Stretched in Your Work?

''We the unwilling,
led by the unknowing,
are doing the impossible
for the ungrateful.
We have done so much,
for so long,
with so little,
that we are now qualified
to do anything
with nothing.''

A good balance

This homeschool journey is a learning one! We are in our 3rd year of homeschooling, but our first full year. It has been a great journey of learning what works for us versus my actual schooling philosophies. I have 6 kids, all under 8 and 4 of them under 4! Several things are my favorite and I wanted to share here! Workboxes! This has been a huge organizational help as well as making things more independent. I also love Sonlight curriculum, because reading is easy to do with lots of kids around, teaching lots of lessons is not! But, in light of that I am switching to Heart of Dakota curriculum. It is better laid out for us and I am so excited about it!! In fact it came just yesterday.

I also got hung up wanting my kids to like everything! The thing the Lord gave peace to my heart in about that was, not to worry if they love it so much as do I love it!! I will run out of steam and not be motivated to press through unless I am excited about it! The teachers I had in school who loved the subject were the best, even if I hated that subject! So, keeping myself encouraged and motivated is a goal, and then hopefully it will rub off! I also do engage my children's likes and dislikes as well as learning styles, but being stretched is good too!

Bible & Spiritual growth
After 15 years....

After 15 years of homeschooling, you'd think I'd have it all figured out. Nope. It has amazed me how time has flown, how my children have grown and I have adjusted. The hope and plans I had at the beginning of this journey have shifted and changed, become more focused and more broad. The key things I have learned are to give myself grace, keep loving and hoping, and to draw near to Papa God. Fear may try to tempt me for a season, but God always draws me back into His arms of rest.

All you dear ones, starting out in homeschooling, my heart soars for you! You are beginning a journey that will forever change your outlook on life and love. Don't be afraid to reach out to others for help and encouragement. Don't hesitate to drop your agenda and love your kids. Give yourself lots of grace and mercy because the Father does. Most importantly, enjoy these years. They go much faster than you can imagine and are worth more than diamonds!

Laminating Sheets

I like my kids to cover pages in certain workbooks with laminating sheets that we then do not actually laminate. We just insert the page into the sheet. Then the child uses a dry erase marker to write on the sheet. This way my other children can use the same workbook the next year.

Classified Listing

Hi! We need a way to input classified information about books and then put them in a ''holding'' file to make active as soon as we sell a book on our list. This would be different than making it temporarily inactive because it wouldn't affect our allowed posts. I have probably 1000 books I need to sell and currently only have 120 listed. I would like to be able to enter in the information for the other books when I have free time and have them be ready to become ''live'' sales when I want them to.

iPhone Calendar Help

If you have an iphone or another smartphone that has a calendar and event/alert option, you can use it to help you stay organized. For instance, when I listed items today on homeschoolclassifieds, I remembered that I once let them expire (60 days) and I had to relist them all over again. I just set a reminder about 58 days from now to relist if items don't sell. Time saved!
